Stone town is one of the few intact historical Swahili coastal trading towns of East Africa. Its myriad of small shops, its mix of people, its bustling markets and eateries, mosques, churches and Hindu temples combine and homogenize disparate elements of different cultures.
Stone Town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. On our Stone Town tour you can discover interesting artefacts like the carved Arab doors with brass studs, carved balconies, the old post office or the kanga market. Our guides will spot the most interesting things to see and spice them with informative and witty anecdotes.
Jozani Forest is part of the "Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park", a tropical natural reserve forming an important ecosystem. The high, dense ground water forest is home to the red colobus monkey, a very rare species only found in Zanzibar. A local guide will show you to small colonies of these unusual primates.
The tropical rain forest, with its lush vegetation and animal life, is an attraction itself. The blue Sykes monkey, elephant shrews and bush babies are other animals to be seen. The tour includes also a walk through the mangrove forest.
A traditional wooden dhow will bring you on a 20 minutes ride to Prison Island. The islet was formerly used as a private detention for disobedient slaves. Later a jail was constructed, but never actually used.
Today the island is a small tourist resort, famous for its giant tortoises. Our tour guide will give you a short introduction to the islet's interesting past and you can then spend some time sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling, or walking around to see tortoises and peacocks.
